“One of the best things that’s happened to jazz.” —New York Times
GRAMMY®-winning jazz pianist Danilo Pérez brings his seasoned and formidable trio to kick off the 2012 Festival with a bang. Filled out by bassist Ben Street and drummer Antonio Sanchez, the trio is the musical vehicle in which Danilo soars, helping him to create “a bold example of the musicological rethinking of jazz,” according to the New York Times. Danilo first came to international attention in Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, and his work with Wayne Shorter’s band prompted Herbie Hancock to say of Danilo, “he’s not afraid of anything.” Drawing on roots in folk music as well as his mastery of classical forms and techniques, Danilo’s vision of jazz — along with his joyous enthusiasm — will make this a memorable and inspiring evening.
