The Fox Theater Spokane opened September 1931 as an art-deco movie theater. Back then, the Theater was the largest in the city, boasting 2300 seats along with the most technologically advanced visual and audio features of that era. The Fox Theater Spokane also served to accommodate live, on-stage performances, attracting some of the biggest names in entertainment; Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby each featured on The Fox Theater Spokane schedule at one time or another in those earlier years.
Sadly, the venue entered into a period of decline beginning in the early 1970s. Then, after a run of close to 70 years, The Fox Theater Spokane closed in 2000 amidst rumors of demolition to make way for a new parking lot.
However, thanks to an extensive fundraising effort led by a Miss Myrtle Woldson, the venue was saved. A $31 million renovation project was soon underway, and the rejuvenated Fox Theater Spokane reopened in 2007 under the new title, 'Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox' - in honor of Miss Woldson's father who was a passionate advocate of music and the arts.
The new and improved venue marked its rebirth in style. On its opening night, The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox Theater schedule featured performances by the venue's new tenants, the Spokane Symphony, and Tony Bennett amongst others.
The Fox Theater Spokane is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
