Vermont Youth Dancers Presents: "Turn To Stone, A Journey To Narnia"

Vermont Youth Dancers puts their own spin on the classic story The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. When the Pevensie children are sent away from London during World War II, they have no idea the fantastic journey they are about to begin. Their simple game turns into the adventure of a lifetime, as they pass through a wardrobe into the magical land of Narnia. There they find a land full of mystical creatures, frozen into eternal winter by an evil White Witch. The children can only hope the return of the Great Lion, Aslan can help them restore beauty and peace to the land. Will they find their courage to overcome the evil White Witch? VYD brings this tale of friendship, loyalty, and true forgiveness to the stage through dance to current music.
VYD delights audiences with their unique blend of thrilling hip-hop and captivating lyrical choreography, with song choices that “tell” the story. The lines between dance and drama are clouded, as the cast brings characters to life through dance and acting, with imaginative staging, beautiful costumes, and stunning set pieces. The show sold out three performances in Jericho this April.
VYD is a community dance company of area elementary, middle and high school students founded in 2006, by Jericho resident and Director Mia Groff, and co-directed by Theresa Robinson. VYD grew from its original 5 dancers into a first-rate performance experience for local youth, ages 8 to 18, who commit to a rigorous rehearsal schedule and learn choreography and drama to animate their characters on stage. This year’s cast of 46 includes dozens of local talented dancers from Jericho, Underhill, Essex, South Burlington, Williston, and Fletcher.

“This is a story of hope,” says Groff. “As the Pevensie children face the horrors of WWII and take their first steps toward adulthood, they learn the power of forgiveness, faith and family. In their adventure, they find their way back to each other and ultimately back home. We hope VYD has given our dancers a safe place as they journey through the uncertainties of childhood, especially as we launch our senior class off to their next adventure.”
Robinson adds, “This magical land has been such a joy to capture with this extraordinary group of young people. Dancing in a fantasy world of seemingly unending snow, that melts into the hopeful release of spring…it is indescribable!”
This year in keeping with the setting of the show, VYD honors the work and service of our area’s veterans by raising money for the Rapid Re-housing of Vermont Veterans Program through Pathways Vermont. The Pathways program works to end veteran homelessness by helping individuals and their families gain and retain stable housing. “No one who has served our country should ever go without shelter,” says Pat Gallagher, Development Director at Pathways. “We work every day to ensure that our Veteran Families have a home to call their own, and we are truly thankful to have the support of the Vermont Youth Dancers.”

Previous VYD performances include Aladdin’s Last Wish, Pride, Between the Raindrops, A Journey to Oz, Cinderella Unwritten, Forever Young-A Peter Pan Tale, Breakthrough, Come With Me, Young Forever – Back to Neverland, Carry On, A Song Will Rise, A Better Place, A Twist on Oliver, Mad At Nothing, Or A Hatter’s Guide to Wonderland, and last year’s performance: Castle on the Hill, A Tale of King Arthur.
