I have Capt Becker on the Skipper charter boat scheduled to take a group out to Horn Island on Sat Sep 4 then pick us up on Mon Sep 6. Plans are to unload the Skipper at the Walter Anderson Trail on the Sound side then pack the gear across the island using Walter's trail to the area where the Gulf beach starts, beautiful sand dunes and a beach 1000' wide. This is a great place for camping because the day campers and party boat people don't use it. Horn will probqbly have a good many party boats this weekend but they will be on the SOund side in other locations. It will take 2 or 3 trips to get the gear from the Sound to the beach but it's worth it. The bird nesting is over, the keep out signs are down and we can hike the entire island and both beaches. There are several island crossings, good (but sandy) hiking, things to photograph, wildlife to see, swimming, and fishing. Horn Island offers the best wilderness camping in the entire southeast. With the charter boat transportation, this is a good opportunity to experience Horn. This is a family friendly event and kids are invited. There is a description of Horn Island with maps and hiking info at my web page, barrierislandsms.com. The charte cost is $400 but if we have 8 or 10 going, the shared cost for the boat rides will be a bargain. In fact, the boat ride alnoe would be worth it!
