In Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale (L'Histoire du Soldat), a confederate soldier returning home at the end of the Civil War trades his violin to the Devil for a book that contains the secrets to acquiring great riches. When the soldier reaches his home town in Tennessee, he discovers that his girlfriend is deathly ill. He then learns that only by playing the violin for her can he save her, so he tricks the Devil into giving back the violin. He plays for his girlfriend and she miraculously recovers.
