End Time: 7:00 PM
Almodóvar’s humble origins go back to a small town in the region of La Mancha, Spain. He couldn’t afford going to a formal filmmaking school and saved the money to buy a Super 8 camera with which he began his venture with alternative short films. Spanning 1972-1978 he gained popularity with his films in the Spanish counter-culture, a reaction to the long-term fascist regime of Francisco Franco who ruled Spain from 1936 to 1975. Almodóvar soon became a star film art director and writer of “La Movida” and “El Destape”, the pop cultural movements of the 70s in Madrid.
On November Tuesday 3 at 5pm Sedona Public Library’s Latino Services will present the first full-length feature that gave him international recognition and introduced actors such as Antonio Banderas and Carmen Maura. This is a 1988 hilarious, frivolous, yet sometimes dark comedy about conflicting love relationships. The characters move in a web of love, jealousy, lies and infidelity set in the backdrop of political events involving Shiite terrorists, a plot that today acquires particular relevance. If you enjoy Almodóvar’s openness to sexual issues and his strong female characters do not miss these four Tuesdays featuring the best of the so-called “Almodóvar’s phenomenon” at Sedona Public Library. Entrance is free, donations appreciated.
