Description
Even if you stripped away everything that makes The War Room look so damn good — the wood paneling inside and out, the square booths along the edge of the dance floor and even the killer constructivist-style murals by Obey Giant artist Shepherd Fairey — it would figure among the top 10 of Seattle's club venues. Try as I might, I can't think of anything the club does wrong. The bars are separated from the dance floor and stage, the music mix encompasses everything from hip-hop to garage rock, the décor is easy on the eyes, and the happy hour specials —$3 well drinks, $2 Millers from 4 to 9 p.m. — are kick-ass.

However, what many people seem to love most about The War Room isn't even inside the building, but on top of it: the club’s rooftop patio. Other bars may pride themselves on their waterfront or street-front patio views, but The War Room has earned its bragging rights in this category: Its rooftop patio makes the best of one of the least interesting street corners in Seattle's city core. The intersection of Pike and Broadway is boxed in by a supermarket, various unremarkable retailers, an office building and the community college, yet The War Room's tropical-flavored patio bar makes the surroundings seem nearly exotic.

When you step back inside (or if you step back inside; it's awfully pleasant out on the patio), you're greeted by a mix of music and entertainment you can find only on the Hill. There's something happening at The War Room every night of the week, whether it's local bands rockin' out, DJs spinning drum & bass and mashups, gay and lesbian events, fashion shows or b-boys doing their thing. It's also the permanent home of "Yo, Son!," the hottest hip-hop night in town. The only war you'll fight here is with late-night fatigue.
