Neighborhood art walks

Soil, with new digs in a narrow, high-ceilinged space on East Pine Street, is an artist co-op run for-the-artists, by-the-artists. It shows wild, alternative works in all mediums: painting, drawing, photography, multi-media, sculpture and installation. Past exhibits include irreverent, realistic paintings featuring Ronald McDonald as Jesus at The Last Supper; a pop-culture exploration of the fame and mythology of stars like Pat Benatar; and explorations of such themes as beauty and body consciousness, privacy and surveillance, nature, architecture and graphic arts.

Anywhere between 10 and 20 artists pay dues and staff the front desk, and the co-op is recruiting new members. It often hosts funky performance-art happenings and art auctions, and it previously published an alternative 'zine, "Crop."
