Visitors to the 1933 art-moderne Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park will appreciate this quiet, peaceful retreat from hectic Capitol Hill and Downtown. The museum, which houses the majority of the Seattle Art Museum's 7,000-piece Asian art collection, specializes in works from Japan, China, Korea, India, Southeast Asia and the Himalayas.

Considered one of the best Asian art collections in the country, the museum's holdings include Japanese ink painting, calligraphy and Buddhist sculpture; Chinese tomb figures, jade carvings and puppets; Korean screens and ceramics; Southeast Asian Buddhist and Hindu sculptures and historical Thai ceramics.

The museum also offers lectures relating to current exhibits, kids events, Japanese tea ceremonies and artist demonstrations on esthetic techniques such as flower arranging. Family movies are free on the first Saturday of every month.
