With its immense sales floor, 65-foot climbing wall, wooded trail for testing mountain bikes and clocks displaying the time on every significant mountaintop in the world, REI's Seattle flagship store is less retail experience and more theme park. That's not to say that you can't find top-quality snowboards, skis, mountaineering gear, hiking boots, backpacks, kayaks and nearly everything else a soul could need to tackle the great outdoors, but it's admittedly difficult to look around this hangar-sized operation and not think, "What, no log ride?"

That said, REI is pretty much the standard for outdoor retailers, and the company doesn't take that title lightly. Free clinics intended to make you a better climber, camper, snowboarder, etc. are offered almost daily. The staff is always ready to answer your questions, and if doubts remain, REI has gear-testing stations that allow you get a feel for the equipment yourself. It may not be a theme park, but you're almost certain to leave REI happy.
