Professor David Spafford speaks on "Why Has Japan Only Had One Dynasty?"
This fall SAM s new Center for Asian Art and Ideas, in collaboration with University of Washington faculty, presents a 10-week lecture series on Saturdays. Weeks
1â"3 focus on India, weeks 4â"6 on China and weeks 7â"9 on Japan. Each segment includes a historical overview, contemporary politics and society, and art and culture.

The museum, which houses the majority of the Seattle Art Museum's 7,000-piece Asian art collection, specializes in works from Japan, China, Korea, India, Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. Considered one of the best Asian art collections in the country, the museum's holdings include Japanese ink painting, calligraphy and Buddhist sculpture; Chinese tomb figures, jade carvings and puppets; Korean screens and ceramics; Southeast Asian Buddhist and Hindu sculptures and historical Thai ceramics. The museum also offers lectures relating to current exhibits, kids events, Japanese tea ceremonies and artist demonstrations on esthetic techniques such as flower arranging.
