More about University Prep School
University Prep School
DescriptionUniversity Prep is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian day school for grades six through twelve. We offer an outstanding college preparatory education to a diverse group of students. Our program features top-notch academics, arts, athletics, and cocurricular activities, and allows each student to chart a distinctive path in pursuit of an abiding interest or an adventure into the unknown. Beyond academics, we believe in preparing students for adult life, focusing on respect for self and others, effective problem solving, and mature decision making. We are committed to imparting the value of diversity and the importance of giving back to the community.
Enrollment
Approximately 478 students attend University Prep. Our Upper School, which includes grades nine through twelve, has about 278 students, and the Middle School, which includes grades six through eight, has about 200 students. Academic classes average sixteen students.
Our Campus
Located in Seattle’s Wedgwood neighborhood, University Prep’s campus is comprised of four main buildings: the three-story classroom and administrative building (including a library, cafeteria, and meeting spaces), a dedicated classroom building, a gymnasium, and the fine arts center, which features a state-of-the-art proscenium theater as well as art and practice rooms. We use the adjacent Dahl Playfield for sports and other activities.
Curriculum
Given the demanding nature of University Prep's curriculum, no honors classes are offered. The year is organized into two semesters, and students are expected to carry a minimum of five classes each semester. School hours are 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., after which athletics, activities, and after-school programs begin. In addition to academic classes, the day includes electives, physical education, supervised study, and free periods for Upper School students.
Student/Faculty Ratio 9:1
Founding University Prep was founded in 1976 by a small group of Seattle Public School teachers dedicated to providing the best possible education to students in small classes.
Accreditation and Affiliation University Prep is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools. The school is a member of NAIS, CEEB, NACAC, NASSP, ASCD, and WCHSCR.
