Interested in learning about jewelry and small metals? I will be teaching a beginning metals class September 20 - November 8, 2009, at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in the Central District. The classes are Sunday evenings, from 6-10pm. I will be teaching basic metalsmithing techniques, including cold connections, surface patterning and treatments, soldering, hollow construction, and bezel setting. You will leave this class with one or two finished pieces if you'd like, or a plethora of samples. This class is about exposing you to as many basic techniques as I can, and letting you decide what you'd like to focus on. Here's what Pratt says about their basic metals class: "Designed for beginners and for those who need a refresher, this course introduces students to the fundamentals of metalworking. Via demonstrations, individualized instruction, and plenty of practice, you will develop basic skills in sawing, filing, soldering, riveting, texturing, polishing, and more. You will also be guided in the safe usage of power and hand tools, as well as common studio chemicals. In addition, instructors cover how to select tools and where to purchase supplies.
