Canary Islands to Gibraltar: John Connolly's Moroccan Adventure (FREE)

Modern Sailing is pleased to announce the third talk in our Summer Speaker Series! John Connolly Presents... Canary Islands to Gibraltar: A Moroccan Adventure! Slideshow and Presentation Thursday, July 19, 2009 6:30pm to 10:00 pm at the Golden Gate Yacht Club This intriguing talk is not-to-be-missed for any sailor--especially those interested in worldwide cruising and other cultures. John will discuss his most recent trip to Morocco, accompanied by a one-of-a-kind slideshow. Leg 1 or the Spain trip began in the Canary Islands on March 1st. Six eager students met up with John to plan their trip: an ocean passage of nearly 1000 miles in 12 days, the first stop being Lanzarote, the east-most Canary Island. Having learned of heavy weather and rough conditions, the group altered plans and decided to head to the Moroccan coast, rather than North to Madeira. This coast was strictly prohibited by the charter company and after arrival, the group learned that they were the first Americans to visit in the last 3 years! This passage didn't keep them out of heavy weather. The night before they landed on the coast, the winds were 55 knots with 30 foot seas. John's incredible story about this epic trip will be truly inspiration for anyone with an interest in exploration and sailing. John Connolly has over 45 years of sailing experience in oceans all over the world. Sharing with students his love for sailing and his expertise acquired through many ocean voyages, John provides practical knowledge and useful skills that can be applied in any sailing venue. As a speaker, John weaves years of experience in exotic destinations with compassion and energy, flavoring his talks with personal anecdotes as well as poignant information.
