Mel began his painting career in 1964 while recuperating from back surgery. He studied oil painting under the direction of the late Mary Rhodes of Sarasota, Florida. Ms. Rhodes served as a prominent judge in many local art shows. Mel also studied water color technique under accomplished artist Marge Brandt of Wapakoneta, Ohio.
Mel has won many art exhibit awards. These awards include such accolades as a “First Place” ribbon in impressionism style, a “First Place” ribbon in originality, and a “First Place” ribbon (by popular vote of the people) in the tri-state competition for Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.
Mel has mastered several distinct and accomplished styles of art. These techniques include traditional oil paintings, contemporary acrylic paintings, glue based abstracts, black fiber art, basket weave abstracts, and beautiful airbrush art.
Included in this broad range of successful endeavors, Mel has completed a beautiful collection of historic pieces capturing many treasured landmarks in Sarasota, Florida. These large three dimensional sculpted paintings are carved from deep Styrofoam and are valued from $3000 to $10000 each.
Most recently, Mel has introduced his newest creative style which he has called Artistic Illusions. While blending color into specially mixed silicone base, this genre offers texture and unique depth. As each piece is completed, it is covered with a high gloss glaze which brings a purely elegant effect to the finish.
Many of Mel’s paintings are on display through out the United States and other parts of the world. Whether you choose the simplicity of the airbrush on watercolor paper, the detail of oil, or the three dimensional carvings, Mel has something to please each and every art lover.
