The New Mexico Jazz Festival: Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Allen Toussaint

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are celebrating their 35th Anniversary with their new album Twenty Dozen due out on May 1, 2012. A New Orleans institution, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band are responsible for revolutionizing the brass band sound by incorporating funk and bebop into the traditional style. They led the way in a brass band resurgence have toured worldwide. Originally formed as the house band of the Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in 1977, the Dozen have collaborated with artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, the Black Crowes and Widespread Panic among others. The Dirty Dozen are Gregory Davis, trumpet, vocals; Roger Lewis, baritone & soprano saxophone; Kevin Harris, tenor saxophone; Terence Higgins, drums; Jake Eckert, guitar; Efrem Towns, trumpet, flugelhorn; Kirk Joseph, sousaphone.

One of America’s greatest musical treasures, singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer, Allen Toussaint is a New Orleans native who has been making hit records for over forty years. His massive influence on American music reaches deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theater, blues and jazz and he played an essential role in developing the sound of New Orleans–one that eventually brought artists like Dr. John, the Band and the Rolling Stones to a world-wide audience. Inducted into the 1998 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Toussaint has collaborated and recorded with everyone from Elvis Costello (with whom he recorded The River in Reverse, a dedication to the rebuilding and return of New Orleans), the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Cyndi Lauper, Brad Mehldau, Madeline Peyroux and many more. Toussaint has received many honors and awards and will be inducted into the 2012 Blues Hall of Fame on May 9, 2012.
