Event details: A Shadow Falls: Nick Brandt | The Colorado Bridge Project...
Description
Born and raised in London, Nick Brandt studied film and painting at St. Martins School of Art. In December of 2000, he began photographing East Africa and developed the body of work that is now his signature style and subject matter. Brandt’s unique portraits of African wildlife have received acclaim worldwide, with solo exhibitions in New York, Santa Fe, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Hamburg, Munich, San Francisco, Sydney, among others.
A Shadow Falls, Nick Brandt’s second major body of work, continues his ambitious ongoing project of memorializing the natural grandeur of East Africa, an epic vision of the wild that is steadily disappearing. Brandt approaches his majestic animal subjects with an empathy usually reserved for humans, yet his iconic portraits also recognize the bleakness of the animal’s future for survival, a sentiment echoed in the ominous series title. Time Magazine: "African wildlife has never looked so regal and mysterious as in Brandt's grave photographs." American Photo: "Combining splendid natural backdrops with a portraitist's approach to animals, Brandt's images show not only the reckless beauty of Africa's vanishing wilds but also the humanity of its creatures. The photos have an uncanny intimacy."
The new monograph, A Shadow Falls, is the second in a planned trilogy of books and exhibitions; the titles of all three works will eventually form a complete sentence. The monograph reproduces fifty-eight recent images and includes essays by philosopher Peter Singer, author of the groundbreaking Animal Liberation, and the distinguished photography critic Vicki Goldberg. The limited edition version of the book is presented in a clothbound clamshell box and accompanied by one of two signed 12”x15” prints, each in a limited edition of 75. The print choices are Cheetah & Cubs Lying on Rock, Serengeti 2007, and an image to be released on September 1, 2009. Both Limited and trade editions are available for pre-order through photo-eye Gallery and Bookstore.
In The Colorado Bridge Project, Jamey Stillings photographs the construction of a 1900 foot bridge, the longest concrete arch span in the United States and the fifth longest in the world. Stillings photographs capture the bridge’s construction with a reawakened sense of childhood curiosity and awe.
