Reel Work Presents: Harvest of Empire

Reel Work Labor Film Festival celebrates International Workers Day with this film presentation: HARVEST OF EMPIRE (Peter Getzels & Eduardo López, 2012, 90 min) A breakthrough contribution to the immigration debate based on the book by Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez which documents how US Foreign policy consciously stimulated immigration from Latin America, while never affording the respect shown to Europeans to these new arrivals from south of the border. Héctor Perla Jr., Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Latin American & Latino Studies Department at UCSC, will speak and lead discussion on the film. Perla earned his degrees at Stanford and UCLA. His studies of revolutionary and social movements, particularly Central Americans' historical and present struggles, shed light on the powerful role that ordinary people, even traditionally marginalized political actors, can play in resolving political of conflicts. He remains active in various Central American support organizations. David Winters sings labor songs.
