Comfort Twin:
A band birthed in the Northern California in 2011, but influenced by generations of musicians, thinkers and events, Comfort Twin is an eight-piece music collective whose stunning debut Ghost Waltz evokes a folk sound that is upbeat and sassy, yet homey and refined. Fans of artists such as Wilco, Bon Iver and The Black Keys will instantly connect with the refreshing rhythms and nourishing hymns that are handled with care by Comfort Twin. Whether its for a dark January night when the warmth of Summer seems decades away, a drive along the misty seaside, or a snuggle session with new lover, Comfort Twin provides a sonic guide through the trials and travails that hurtle into everyday life.
Dill Flies:
When Ryan Coe rolled into Santa Cruz in 2004 and quickly landed a job as assistant cheese cutter to Austin Carlson at a local downtown market, it only took them a few weeks to figure out that they had actually played music together the previous summer, 300 miles away, strumming acoustic guitars under the redwoods of Humboldt County. Naturally it wasn't long before they decided, like Bob Dylan on that historic day in 1965, to set the acoustics aside and plug in those huge sounding electric guitars to see what happens. Luckily for them it was pure, raucous, dripping wet, inter-stellar madness. In other words, a great start. Also lucky for them was that Ryan knew a drummer, Jason Borgen, whom he had formed a band with in fifth grade, before the two even had any instruments. First things first, right?
With the final addition of bass player Josh Borgen, Dill Flies was born. Their name serves to commemorate their friend and former band mate Brian "Dill" McCullah. A son, pilot, poet, soon to be husband, and so much more, who lost his life in a 2010 plane crash doing what he loved.
In keeping with his spirit, Dill Flies fills the room with their special breed of psychedelic Americana. Drawing inspiration from the improvisation and musical exploration of the The Grateful Dead, mixing that with a modern sonic palette, and including the futuristic use of live-looping, the band literally pumps out the good times with their rowdy, spacey, danceable tunes. Together with a hungry audience, they consume that perfect bowl of cosmic jamband porridge, not too hot, not too cold, but just right.
It is also worthy to note that the band has begun to earn a reputation for it's live light show.
With what can be best described as a giant abstract sculpture created out of a dense web of every christmas light imaginable, they fill the stage with colors from art in a genre that is all it's own. To take it one step further, the lights can be controlled by the audience who can turn them on and off, thus creating an endless variety in pattern and sequence. This ability tears down a crucial barrier between observer and performer - opening the door for a truly new and exciting form of interaction to occur.
Broke The Moon:
Broke the Moon is a collaborative project between two artists: Sean Carscadden and Marty O’Reilly. Each plays a variety of different forms of traditional American music ranging from Delta and Chicago Blues, Folk, Country, Western Swing and Gospel. The two work together to write their own unique original songs and also to create renditions of old classics by artists such as Blind Willie Johnson, Johnny Cash, The Band, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and many more. The strength of the project lies in the complex vocal harmonies, rhythmic guitar and Banjo parts, and the original pieces that explore many different genres of American music.
