      EVENT DETAILS
Callous Physical Theatre // Double Blind Sided: Kafka's German Process

Callous Physical Theatre presents Double Blind Sided, a contemporary opera inspired, in part, by Franz Kafka's The Trial . In post-9/11 security state, through the PATRIOT Act and other concessions, the trials and tribulations of Josef K as imagined by Kafka have gone beyond the realm of metaphoric satire and have become a very real possibility. "Double Blind Sided" explores Kafka's memes that continue to resonate in the 21st century. Creating variations upon the motifs from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, composer Robert Fruehwald creates emotionally moving music for poet G.B.Waldschmidt's witty libretto; a non-linear montage of anachronistic scenes connecting Kafka's novel, Weimar Germany's slide into Nazism, the Vietnam War, and current economic and political events. Artistic directors Jos├ęphine A. Garibaldi and Paul Zmolek utilized a collaborative devising methodology with the eight performers to create movement directly linked to the text. The result is a densely-packed hour of total theatre rich images, beautiful singing, witty wordplay, exuberantly physical performance. CPT's award-winning work has been performed in Finland, Italy, Brazil, California, Washington, Iowa, Missouri, Utah, Nebraska, and Idaho. Recent works include "The Rule of Life" (2011), a physical theatre work inspired by the Orders of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi with exhibitions in Idaho and Italy. Garibaldi and Zmolek teamed with Finnish poet Karri Kokko to create and perform "Cagevent: Sometimes it works, Sometimes it doesn't", a 2 hour performance event inspired by John Cage in the Helsinki 2012 Kontaining Performance Festival.
