Successful Fundraising in a Recession

In this interactive workshop, Bob Zimmerman will show you that even in a recession, there is ample philanthropic money available to fund nonprofits of all shapes and sizes. In fact, the recession presents unparalleled opportunities for entrepreneurial nonprofits to cultivate prospective donors. As things improve, those cultivation efforts will pull you into future growth faster.

Bob will discuss a variety of fundraising campaigns including annual, capital and endowment and the challenges and opportunities each one presents. He will also go over a number of important fundraising concepts that underpin all successful campaigns and provide you with tools for helping staff and board members overcome their "fear and loathing" of fundraising. Bob will end the session by reviewing various fundraising campaigns that have succeeded during this recession and drawing out valuable lessons that you can use.

Presenter Robert M. Zimmerman, Fundraising Specialist, Author and President of Zimmerman Lehman, has over 35 years of experience in the field of fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Nationally known as a fundraising trainer and consultant, Bob has taught workshops for staffs and boards of directors in the United States and Europe. Bob teaches boards to overcome their fear of fundraising and create successful campaigns. His dry wit, combined with a down-to-earth approach, is accessible to everyone, regardless of his or her level of sophistication in fundraising. A graduate of Antioch College, Bob has an M.A. from the University of Michigan. He has served on the Board Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and is currently Co-chair of the "Ask the Experts" panel at AFP's 2009 "Fundraising Day" in San Francisco. Bob has been Director of Development at a variety of nonprofit organizations on both coasts, including the Youth Law Center and the Westside Center for Independent Living. He is the author of Boards That Love Fundraising: A How-To Guide For Your Board, Major Donors: The Key To Successful Fundraising and Board Members Rule: How to Be a Strategic Advocate for Your Nonprofit. Bob regularly contributes to ZimNotes, a fundraising e-newsletter now in its 12th year of publication.
