The Black Cedar Duo kicks off its Seven-City Concert Tour in San Jose

The Black Cedar Duo kicks off its Seven-City Fall Concert Tour at San Jose State University’s Concert Hall on Saturday, September 15, 2012.
With Steve Lin on guitar and Kris Palmer on the African wood flute, alto flute, and recorder, the Black Cedar Duo is the only ensemble of its kind: they use this versatile pairing to explore and create repertoire ranging from Renaissance love songs, to Appalachian folk songs, to recent compositions from Asia and our own local composers. “They perform beautifully together: perfect synchronization of subtle rhythms and phrases,” writes the South Bay Guitar Society.

Shain Carrasco, Principal Cellist of Oakland Opera, joins the Black Cedar Duo in Cambodian-born composer Chinary Ung’s Luminous Spirals, a work featuring traditional Cambodian folk melodies, harmonies, and sonorities. Ung wrote this piece in 1997 during a prolific period of composing that came after a decade-long hiatus to aid relatives and artists escaping the murderous and oppressive Khmer Rouge regime.

Mr. Lin and Dr. Palmer team up to deliver the old Elizabethan love songs of Renaissance master John Dowland on recorder and guitar, then the new Elizabethan expressions of Ned Rorem's twentieth-century musical interpretation of the Bard's love tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet," performed on African wood flute and guitar.

Mr. Lin is a winner of the Boston GuitarFest competition, and Dr. Palmer is a second-prize winner in the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition. She is also the author of a book on C.P.E. Bach’s and J. J. Quantz’ ornamentation techniques, and she brings her expertise to one of Quantz’ Trio Sonatas.
