Description
City services and employees have moved from many locations all over the city to new headquarters on 200 East Santa Clara Street. Designed by renowned architects Richard Meier & Partners, the new San Jose City Hall was thoughtfully planned to make it as simple as possible to access City services. Some highlights include: Rotunda: This glass-domed public gallery space stretches 108 feet high, and serves as the central information point for visitors to the New City Hall. The open space under the glass dome connects directly to the open space of the public plaza to provide an exciting new venue for community celebrations and events. City Council Chambers: The 7,000-square-foot council chambers uses state-of-the-art audio/video technology and will provide 330 seats with overflow available in the community meeting rooms directly behind the dais. The dais is at the same level as the speaking podium to encourage open dialog between the Council and constituents. The chambers emphasizes the use of natural light, with a skylight along the south side. To achieve this open look, the load is carried along a 92 foot - 40 ton steel beam. Public Meeting Rooms : 121 meeting rooms of various sizes will be available for use by staff and many of which will be reservable for use by community groups. Plenty of Public Gathering Space: Over 2.5 acres of programmable space on the plaza is designed toprovide a venue for community celebrations and events. One-Start Customer Service Center: Located at the base of the office tower, this convenient center provides for efficient customer service by bringing many city operations together at the same public counter, and allowing customers to access frequently used services including planning, building, and other permits. A customer information desk, self-service stations, comfortable waiting areas and a centralized cashier are also included on the first level.
