The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1935, and was the very first museum on the West Coast to devote itself solely to modern and contemporary art. Originally the San Francisco Museum of Art, it gained international recognition in the early to mid-1970s, eventually becoming The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1975.
With over 26,000 works in its current collection including sculptures, paintings, photographs and media arts, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art schedule is both dynamic and engaging. The venue experience is more than just a visual one, too; audio guides, video screenings, interactive kiosks and public programs all offer valuable opportunites to learn more about modern art.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is located within walking distance from downtown San Francisco, and is easily spotted by its soaring atrium, trademark turret, and oculus skylight.
