Dangermaker

It’s a common story. Adam Burnett, lead singer and guitarist of Dangermaker, used to write and record music with a collection of cheap instruments and a four-track cassette recorder in the closet of his creaky old San Francisco apartment. It was a way for him to remain connected to his passion for music, something to keep his mind off of life’s drudgery. Music for Adam went from pastime to obsession. He needed to make music to conquer the void, he needed a band. What he could not have imagined was that an untimely personal loss would become intertwined with the recording of that band’s first full length record. During the first week of tracking “Black Dream” Adam’s father suffered a tragic accident and passed away. The recording process nearly ground to a halt as Adam dealt with the loss of his father, and his band mates coped with those awkward uncertainties that surge during times of despair. Instead of letting this tragedy tear the band apart they used it as motivation. Dangermaker gained direct insight into a parable that artists have held throughout time – human experience is the substance from which honest and great works of art are formed. The band admits that “Without realizing it the experience influenced many of the new songs and furnished new works found throughout the record. Ultimately, recording and songwriting became a healing process that brought us all together.” At times the music on Black Dream is a bit dark and mysterious (to be expected), but there is also a pervasive upbeat energy that is catchy and fun. In many ways the work represents a real progression for the band musically, as the new songs straddle indie dance rock & classic alternative, somewhere between 70′s Bowie & The Clash, The Stooges, The Stills, Spoon, and Interpol. Inspired by this pool of influence and their recent struggle, this core of brilliant musicians have crafted a provocative debut LP.
