Description:
The new Zoo is becoming a reality. In May, 2004, the spacious new African Savanna exhibit opened, featuring giraffe, zebra, kudu, ostrich and other African wildlife roaming together in a lush, 3-acre habitat. This dramatic, mixed-species exhibit brings a variety of animals closer to the public than ever before.

The Lipman Family Lemur Forest opened in summer, 2002, featuring five different species of these amazing primates from Madagascar in a large outdoor setting. Launched with the Lemur Forest, the Leaping Lemur Café offers an indoor dining experience with a wide variety of food choices including personalized, made-to-order pasta and pizza. At the same time we re-located our main entrance to face the Pacific Ocean and launched the Friend and Taube Family Entry Village, offering a gift shop, restrooms, and membership and information booths.

All these exciting new additions join the recently expanded Children's Zoo, restored Dentzel Carousel, the Connie and Bob Lurie Education Center and Koret Animal Resource Center.

We are designing our New Zoo with the underlying belief that interaction and activity lead to conservation action. We hope that caring for specific animals will inspire people to care for all wildlife and that this is the first step in the journey to becoming a conservationist.

Our new conservation Zoo is a multi-faceted place:

* A recreation area where people can relax and have fun

* A center for wildlife that provides exemplary care for rare and endangered species

* A community organization serving the people of the Bay Area

* An educational center providing learning programs for children and adults

* A park and nature center showcasing native plants and gardens

* A bird sanctuary and bird watcher’s paradise

Despite the many reasons that draw people here, we know that once they arrive at the Zoo, they will inevitably fall in love with wildlife, and that upon their departure from the Zoo they will begin their journey to become conservationists. We hope that you too will join us on this journey.
