On Halloween, Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 8:30 PM Oddball Films presents “Terror Noir: The House on Telegraph Hill” featuring a rare 16mm screening of the classic shot-in-San Francisco Film Noir gem The House on Telegraph Hill (1951) starring Richard Basehart and Valentina Cortese directed by famed director and editor Robert Wise. The House on Telegraph Hill features the classic girl-in-jeopardy story. It showcases director Robert Wise’s inventive editing, first-rate cinematography and excellent use of its San Francisco locales in its telling of a guilt-ridden concentration camp survivor who steals another woman’s identity. Also featured with be The Haunted Mouth (1974), an oral hygiene scare film produced for the classroom by the American Dental Association starring Cesar Romeo as the Spectre of Plaque! Plus! 1950s period film trailers and commercials!
Plot Synopsis: Her family wiped out by the Nazis, Belsen Concentration Camp survivor Victoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortesa) steals identities with Karin de Nakova (Natasha Lytess), a dead friend with relatives in San Francisco. She goes to New York and finds out that the only surviving de Nakova has also died, but trustee Alan Spender (Richard Basehart) falls in love with her. They marry and move into the family mansion on a ritzy piece of San Francisco real estate just below Coit Tower. Karin/Victoria is happy to allow young Chris (Gordon Gebert) to take the place of her own lost son, despite the interfering presence of Margaret, Chris' caretaker. Victoria plans never to reveal her true identity until suspicions arise that Alan may be a dangerous murderer out to seize the family fortune. She has only one person to turn to, Marc Bennett (William Lundigan), who she met briefly when Belsen was liberated. But can she trust Marc, and are her suspicions about Alan justified? Director Robert Wise superbly captures the ominous sense of dread by letting the story unfold subtly to its eventual climax. The film is anchored by a strong performance by Italian actress Valentina Cortesa who is bolstered by Fox’s finest technical talent; the gowns, the sets, the locales in San Francisco and the top-notch cinematography and editing by director Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Sound of Music). It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1951 for Best Art Direction.
The Haunted Mouth (Color, 1974) Veteran actor Caesar Romero stars as “The Spectre of Plaque” in The Haunted Mouth (1974), an oral hygiene scare film produced for the classroom by the American Dental Association. Plus! 1950s movie trailers!
