Jason Jägel Monograph SigningOctober 11, 2008 6-9PMMusical guests Egon (Stones Throw), Kamau Patton and othersThe event is free and open to the public
Please join Electric Works and exhibiting artist Jason Jägel for the  official release and booksigning of '73 Funshine.'
Jägel will be signing books and dj'ing along with Egon (Stones Throw  Records) and artist Kamau Patton.
About the monograph:This large-format, full-color monograph by contemporary artist Jason  Jägel features over 200 images from Jägel's career, largely focusing  on his current practice. His sometimes-loose, sometimes-tight  narrative gouache paintings populate this oversize publication. Music  references, family life, and the humming buzz of the street are often  found in a single, sprawling image. His work includes fictional and  actual album cover paintings, records made of paper, narrative vinyl  'grooves' made of pencil and paintings inspired by specific songs,  albums and artists.  Jägel's connection to music has been  strengthened by the use of his paintings as record cover designs for  the LA-based hip-hop label Stones Throw, among others. Stones Throw's  major artist, Madlib, has three exclusive tracks that appear on a  companion 10-inch vinyl record with its own full-color sleeve  designed by Jägel.
This monograph is being released in conjunction with Jägel's solo  exhibition at Electric Works, '73 Funshine.'
About the exhibition:
Electric Works is pleased to announce '73 Funshine,' a solo show by  Bay Area resident Jason Jägel. The exhibition presents selections from various bodies of work,  dating as far back as 1997, and features paintings made specifically  for '73 Funshine.' These endeavors include fictional and actual album  cover paintings, records made of paper, narrative vinyl 'grooves'  made of pencil and paintings inspired by the content of specific  songs, albums and artists. Jägel's father was also an painter: one  who created album covers for Ornette Colman, John Coltrane and more,  just as Jason has in turn, created covers for Madlib, MF DOOM and so  on. This love of music and an exploration of visual interaction with  music anchors this show's themes and ideas.
Jägel was born in 1971 in Boston, Massachusetts.  HIs work has been  exhibited both nationally and internationally.  Jägel's work resides  in the following public collections:  Museum of Modern Art (New  York), Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco), Hammer Museum (Los  Angeles), University of California (San Francisco) among others.
