Event details: Institute on Aging presents: Cornerstones of Care
Description
The Institute on Aging invites you to join us for a unique educational series that explores four cornerstones of professional eldercare. This quarterly series will address end-of-life care, caregiving, clinical care and issues of capacity. These programs are designed to give professionals the multidisciplinary understanding essential for navigating the complex system of services available to older adults.
Rounding the Corner: Integrating End-of-Life Care and Conversations With ServicesWednesday, November 12, 2008 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
This program will tackle the inevitable and important issue a professional must address: How to talk to older adults and their family members about death. What does a professional need to feel comfortable creating an effective dialogue about end-of-life issues? How will this change the care we provide? We will take a holistic approach that includes: interdisciplinary care, awareness of cultural issues and spiritual needs, chronic and advanced illness, caring for yourself and your clients, and grief and loss.
The Labyrinth of Caregiving: Current and Future Issues and OptionsWednesday, February 11, 2009 -- 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
This program will provide professional caregivers with an interdisciplinary approach to interacting with family members and clients. Integrating diverse perspectives, presenters will discuss various caregiving issues and options including: policy and research implications for practice, cross-cultural issues, "compassion fatigue" and burnout, spiritual resources for caregiving, integrating the caregiver into your senior services, non-traditional caregivers, helping families make tough eldercare decisons, and sharing alternative housing models/options.
Complexities of Clinical Care in the 21st CenturyWednesday, May 13, 2009 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
This program will help professionals to understand the nuances of the complex senior healthcare system. Presenters will incorporate a broad spectrum of issues including alcohol and substance abuse, medications, falls and sensory impairments, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary care, cultural and health literacy, complex social factors, communication and the importance of teamwork in Geriatrics.
Capacity: What Is It? How Do We Assess It? What Happens When We Lose It? Wednesday, September 16, 2009 -- 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
This program will provide an overview of decision-making capacity in older adults. Focusing on financial, medical, cultural, legal and ethical topics, presenters from a wide range of disciplines will examine the difficulties that surround the issue of capacity. Presentations will include: How to help your client and their family plan for incapacity, advance directives, capacity screening tools, working with victims with diminished capacity, diversity, updates on legislation/laws, autonomy vs. safety, financial abuse, scams and fraud; protecting yourself and your client.
