Artists with Developmental Disabilities at San Francisco's Creativity Explored Give Voice to Memories Both Real and Imagined in a New Group Exhibition of Original Artworks that Merge Images with Text.



If a picture is worth a thousand words, what is a picture covered in words worth? In the case of Creativity Explored's many studio artists with developmental disabilities, a number of who are non-verbal, making art that brings images and text together can become a powerful way to communicate stories that often remain untold. A new group exhibition this January and February offers a compelling glimpse into the interior worlds and memories of many of the gallery's studio artists through works that feature personal snippets of text incorporated into paintings, drawings and works on wood. Featured artists include Camille Holvoet, Daniel Green, Evelyn Reyes, James Miles and many others.

Legend -- Myth and Memory ­ an exhibition of original works that merge images with text by more than 15 artists with developmental disabilities at San Francisco's Creativity Explored

Opening Reception ­ Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m.



Exhibit Dates and Times ­ January 8 ­ February 25, 2009, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday until 7 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 6 p.m.

Creativity Explored
Description: Creativity Explored is a nonprofit visual arts center for artists with developmental disabilities. Since 1983, Creativity Explored has been helping Bay Area adults with developmental disabilities create, exhibit and sell original artwork. More than 120 studio artists work in Creativity Explored’s two dynamic, fully-equipped studios in the media of their choice including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fabric arts, sculpture and animation. Completed artwork is sold through the gallery located at 3245 16th St. in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. The artists come to Creativity Explored from countries around the globe and speak a wide variety of languages including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Thai, German, French, Arabic, Farsi and English. Many members do not speak at all, unable to communicate using spoken words.
