Description
MINGEI INTERNATIONAL, incorporated in 1974, is a non-profit, public foundation dedicated to furthering understanding of art of people from all cultures of the world. These essential arts, expressing many individuals and cultures, share a direct simplicity and joy in making, by hand, useful objects that are satisfying to the human spirit.
Mingei is a special word increasingly used throughout the world for "art of the people." It was coined by the revered scholar Dr. Soetsu Yanagi through combining the Japanese words for all people (min) and art (gei). His teachings awakened people to the essential need to make and use in their daily lives objects which are unfragmented expressions of body, mind and spirit.
