Friday, October 24th, 2003 was a big night. In a freezing, graffiti-scarred old factory called Electrowerkz in Islington, north London, Bloc Party showed what disco-punk sounds like if you take away the cowbells and irony, and replace them with ferocity and tension. In doing so, they proved they belong on a larger stage. Kele Okereke and guitarist Russell Lissack knew each other through mutual friends in Essex where Kele went to school and Russell lived.
