Event details: Between Cultures: Children of Immigrants in America
Description
The New Americans Museum at Liberty Station ends its inaugural year with an exhibition from the heart. In "Between Cultures: Children of Immigrants in America", Chicago photography Gina Grillo captures family experiences as they arrive in Chicago as new Americans and chronicles their integration into urban life â in new neighborhoods, with family, at
cultural celebrations, citizenship ceremonies and many other everyday scenes.
âThe New Americans Museum opened earlier this year to celebrate Americaâs past and promise by providing inspiring educational and cultural programs that honor our diverse immigrant experiences,â explained Executive Director Gayle Hom. âGrilloâs extraordinary exhibition provides an opportunity to help all of us understand and value our roots and ancestry. Newcomers, as well as many San Diegans, will relate to the challenges and the possibilities that the children in these images face as they begin life in a completely new and foreign home.â
Grilloâs personal commitment to exploring immigrant life in the United States turned into a creative odyssey. Since 1996 the photographer has documented the faces and captured the souls of the young people whose lives straddle two cultures. âI grew up with a longing for my Italian heritage, to know my grandparents who had come to America long before I was born. Their immigrant stories were told to me the way one receives a prayer, and part of my history
was made in their repeating.â
Grillo began by shooting photographs outside the lines of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Later, she photographed citizenship swearing in ceremonies, explored immigrant neighborhoods and ultimately was invited by the INS to photograph new immigrant families arriving at OâHare. This opportunity led Grillo to develop relationships with
individuals, enriching not only her work, but also her understanding of her own heritage. The exhibition has been featured at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, the Childrenâs Immigration Museum - Chicago and The Field Museum-Chicago.

More about New Americas Museum
New Americas Museum
619-255-8908 "The focus will be the immigrant experience. Our museum strives to be a part of a global movement to share the stories of migration. Similar museums are being established in other countries i.e. France, Australia, Brazil, and elsewhere. We hope to share stories of migration from every hemisphere," explained Hom. The 4,000-square-foot museum will also serve as a public forum venue and will partner with other organizations on oral and visual history projects, visual and performing arts programming, cultural events, lectures and speaker series, films, conferences and exhibitions. "You will discover a museum that is not a collection of artifacts," said Deborah Szekely, "but rather a gathering of living ideas and idealsâ¦the stories of brave individuals who left their homelands to create their future in a land of peace and opportunity. Their memories of courageous and often dangerous journeys begineach onewith their indomitable will to take charge of their lives and their future. These are the people who are worthy of being honored by all future generations, for they are the best of the best of their villages, towns and cities. They were the ones who, unwilling to accept status quo, would rather confront the unknown, drawn forward by the shining beacon of freedomthe United States of America. " Residents, visitors, scholars and school groups will find the museum an invaluable gateway to understanding the immigration experience.
