Start Point Address / Driving Directions:
From I-410 (NE), exit Harry Wurzbach and travel south. Turn RIGHT on Dickmann Road and then LEFT into the parking lot of Building 592, Billeting; the start point for the walk. From I-35 North or South Bound, exit Walters Street, turn west and travel on Walters Street to Scott Road. Turn LEFT on Schofield Road, and proceed to Dickmann Road and turn RIGHT. Continue on Dickmann Road to Building 592, Billeting; the start point for the walk. Parking is adjacent to the building. The start box is located in the entrance way on your right. NOTICE: Access to Fort Sam Houston is controlled through all gates. Individuals possessing a Dept. of Defense vehicle registration decal and a DOD identification card may enter at any gate. All other individuals may gain access to the Post ONLY through the Walters Street or Harry Wurzbach gates and must display picture identification (such as a drivers license) for the driver and all passengers in the vehicle. Sorry for the inconvience. Please carry your photo ID at all times during the walk. Event Description: Daily, dawn to dusk. The walk is through Fort Sam Houston which is a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK and has a collection of historical structures and sites which is second to none. Pets on leashes are permitted except inside the Quadrangle. This route goes through the Quadrangle where numerous deer, fowl and rabbits run free, past the Gift Chapel, the 1916 and 1941 quarters of the Eisenhowers, First Flight Memorial dedicated to Lt. Benjamin Foulois who made the first military flight in 1910, Fort Sam Houston and the US Army Medical Department Museums. The role of Ft. Sam Houston has been addressed in numerous non-fiction works relating to Gen. Pershing and his Mexican Expedition and biograpies of Dwight Eisenhower as well as the history of flight. Geronimo was imprisioned for a period of time at the fort.
