Using espionage thrillers as its template, this short course will introduce basic concepts and provide simple exercises to develop fiction writing skills. By the time the course ends, participants will be able to plan a work of fiction and then complete writing it. They will learn how to compose short stories and longer works, how to craft characters that live within the theme of their work, and how to plot a work from beginning to end.

The sessions cover genre, theme, characters, plot, the rules of writing fiction and how to exploit them, and software for novelists. Each session includes homework and every session discusses the assignments done by each student. At the course end, there will be an opportunity for the students to join critique groups.
