With past performers such as Jerry Seinfeld, Dennis Miller, and Dana Carvey, Laughs Unlimited has accumulated a formidable collection of laughs in its 27-year history. Owner and booker Steve Grove keeps the comedy lineup fresh with imported mountain air and a steady rotation of established and up-and-coming comedians. Performers on the horizon include Jimmy Burns (August 3–5), who served time as an elementary-school teacher for 10 years before converting to a life at the mic. He takes the stage to quip about lessons learned as a teacher and as the son of an elderly mother who still forces etiquette lessons upon him concerning dining and motorized scooters. A week later, Sacramento native Brian Diamond (August 9–12) takes the stage after appearing in films that credit him as "Man with Glass" and "Man in Car." To compensate, the self-deprecating comedian wrote, produced, and landed the lead role in his one-man play Virgo: Hebrew Rising. Edgy, fast-paced assaults on societal taboos attack from two fronts when Cory and Chad (August 16–19), aka "The Smash Brothers," grab the mics. The identical twins from East L.A. examine and contextualize racism in the Obama era, all while philosophically stroking their shaved heads and lustrous goatee manes.
Warm brick walls and exposed-beam ceilings line the recently renovated club. Its kitchen serves a full menu marked by a roster of Mexican-inspired tacos, burritos, and snacks ($3–$8), as well as several Californian wines ($6.50–$8.75/glass) and an arsenal of signature cocktails ($7.75).
