FEBRUARY MEETUP MEETING DESCRIPTION February Meeting topics will center around the 4-H poultry chain projects. We will discuss logistics, requirements and brooding tricks, tips and traps. We will plan how to get everyone ready for the March arrival of chicks. Get ready ÃÂ- here come the little fuzzy peepers! Any SVPG Club members who would like to get experience with baby chicks can also get babies to learn and share experiences along with the 4-HerÃÂ's. Cloverbuds (ages 5 to 8) can participate as we have chicks donated from Randall Burkey Company and Andy Schneider of the Chicken Whisperer Talk Show. Thank You Randall Burkey and Andy! To further assist those interested, two intensive, hands-on poultry workshops are offered in February. ÃÂ A Brooding Baby Chicks from Scratch Workshop will be facilitated by Pat Foreman on Saturday, February 13, 1:30 to 4pm. This workshop is required for the 4-H poultry chain and open to the public for anyone interested in starting with day-old chicks and successfully raising them to egg-laying hens. Tuition is $20 club members, $25 to non-members and 4-H members can attend for free, in exchange for 3 hours of service time at poultry events. ÃÂ Laying Hens 101workshop, facilitated by Pat Foreman, will be held Sunday, February 28th from 2:00 to 4:30. This is a comprehensive introductory course for those who want to keep small flocks of laying hens ÃÂ- beginning with adult birds. You will learn the most important considerations in caring for a flock in a limited space. Includes hen anatomy and physiology, behavior, handling, health, nutrition, egg management, and housing basics. This interactive, highly-participatory workshop also covers a which chicken breeds tend to do best in the Shenandoah climate. All questions will be answered and you will leave the course with the knowledge you need to know about successfully keeping chickens in your backyard. Space is limited. Tuition: $20 for Shenandoah Valley Poultry and Garden Club members, $25.00 non-members, 4-HÃÂ'ers may attend free, in exchange for 3 hours of service time at poultry events.
