BOOK LIST IS BELOW.... Hi- Sorry I haven't written in a while. Thought I had better touch bases with our readers. If you are receiving this email and are no longer interested in the book group and would /*like to be removed from the list*/, */please respond and let me know/*. Last month we read Cuba Diaries. A few people showed up. We enjoyed yummy food, fantastic wine and a great discussion on the deck outside of Avery's. Summer is a busy month and we are delighted to provide an evening of entertainment for those who are available. Hopefully, with the coming fall we'll have a chance to see some of you again. I thought I would resend the titles for our next 5 months of reading. There is a short description of each book. If you see something that looks interesting, please join us for a discussion. Remember we meet on the last Monday of the month at 5:30 at Avery's - 427 SW 8th. The following titles are the ones we choose for our next reads. August - "People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks. A novel. A rare-book expert is offered the job of a lifetime; analysis and conservation of the famous Sarajevo Haggadah, which was rescued during the Bosnian War. When a series of tiny artifacts are discovered in the book's ancient binding a mystery is unlocked. Good site to read about the actual Sarajevo Haggadah - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarajevo_Haggadah September - "The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World" by Michael Pollan. Non-fiction. Every schoolchild learns about the mutually beneficial dance between honeybee and flower and in the process spreading the flowers genes. In "Botany of Desire" Pollan demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship. October - "Finding Nouf" by Zoe Ferraris. Novel. A mystery set in contemporary Saudi Arabia centers around the disappearance of a 16 year old girl 3 days prior to her marriage. Ten days later her body is discovered in the desert. Her mother hired a desert guide to find Nouf, but once the body is found she is not interested in discovering the truth. Nayir takes it upon himself to find out what happened. November - "Unaccustomed Earth" by Jhumpa Lahiri. Eight short stories by this Pulitzer Prize-winning author take the readers from Cambridge and Seattle to India and Thailand as each explore the secrets of the heart of family life. December - " The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story" by Diane Ackerman. Non-fiction. A true story in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved over three hundred people from the Nazis by hiding refugees in the empty animal cages. January - "One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd" by Jim Fergus. Historical fiction. The novel is based on an actual historical event. It tells the story of a young woman who travels west in 1875 to marry a chief of the Cheyenne nation. With her fate unknown it was better than the insane asylum she faced being sent to, by her family for loving a man beneath her station. Hope to see you on August 31. If you can't join us I hope you are enjoying summer.
