The Geology and Native Plants of New Jersey

From High Point to Cape May, New Jersey is blessed with a variety of natural habitats, each of which has an associated suite of native plants. Each habitat has developed over the period of several thousands of years since the end of the last ice age. All are, in some way, dependent on the rocks and other materials that lie below the surface, as well as the geological processes that are occurring today. Join New Jersey Audubon Society naturalist and geologist Michael Pollock for this illustrated overview of the geology of New Jersey and an examination of a couple of the most important cases where the native plants present are directly tied to the local geology.


Emerging Invasive Landscape Plants

The Central Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team (CJISST) was initiated in 2008 by the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and the Upper Raritan Watershed Association. The goal is preventing the spread of newly emerging invasive species though early detection & rapid response (ED/RR). CJISST has a working list of 71 emerging invasive plants, ranging in status from rare to spreading rapidly. Many of these plants stem from the landscape industry, such as linden & siebold's viburnums and Chinese silver grass. CJISST is working with public and private landowners to identify and eradicate these plants, and stop their reintroductions in order to prevent the further degradation of New Jersey's natural resources.


A New Look for Lawns

Have you ever thought about turning a lawn into a lush meadow full of wildflowers and grasses, creating a space for wildlife and songbirds to enjoy as you walk through the colorful blooms? It can be done. Ecological Landscape Designer Paul W Steinbeiser has been designing and installing native plant meadows for residential and commercial properties for two decades. He will walk you step-by-step through the process of getting rid of the grass and installing a native meadow.
