Neu Romance is a locally produced and internationally influenced cultural movement involving and including people of all ages, races, and preferences that is designed to promote harmony and unity through dance music. It began in March, 2003 as a free weekly dance party featuring free light eats, free pool, cheap drinks and never a dress code. The title is taken from a book by William Gibson (Neuromancer), and was inspired to describe music by artists such as Thievery Corporation, Nightmares On Wax, Esthero, Massive Attack, St. Germain, Fila Brazilia, and Kruder & Dorfmeister. The concept soon grew to embrace artists like Roy Ayers, Rotary Connection, Chicago, Stevie Wonder, Fela Kuti, James Brown, and The Isley Brothers. Hendrix, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Rick James soon worked their way into the mix. Hip -Hop masters like Grandmaster Flash, Eric B. & Rakim, RUN DMC, Kurtis Blow, De La Soul, and A Tribe Call Quest became a part of the scene. Even an occasional Thin Lizzy track would slip in every now and then. But the bread and butter was always dance music. In a way it's all dance music, but Neu Romance was, and very much still is about the music that made Paradise Garage famous, and the Loft, and the Warehouse, and Body & Soul. It's about Larry Levan, and Frankie Knuckles, and Masters At Work. It's about Danny Tenaglia, and Mark Farina, and Josh Wink. It's about Daft Punk, and Basement Jax and Deep Dish. And it's definetly about Gilles Peterson. Neu Romance is about all the DJ's worldwide that play music that ranges from Lemonjelly to Jelly Roll Morton, and who play for audiences that range from 8 to 8000. It's all the RaSouls and Mark Grants who answer letters and-mails, and play gigs in small towns for free or for nothing just to bring love to a dance floor. Neu Romance is about Maceo Parker showing up unannounced, Sharon Jones getting back on stage at 2am, Rafiq Bahtia keeping jazz alive, and Melvin Sparks turning the joint inside out. Neu Romance is about Love.
Over the past six months or so the DJs of Neu Romance have settled into their current home at Five Star Asian Bistro. We are all very appreciative of the hospitality shown to us by all of the staff and management, and we are happy to celebrate our eighth anniversary there this Sunday. Recently Pabst Blue Ribbon has been sponsoring a few Neu Romance events via their Raleigh rep, Kaci Torres. We are very excited to feature Kaci and her partner, Katie as they perform as Acro Entertainment, in conjunction with the Neu Romance DJs.
This is a very special anniversary for me as it will be my last, officially, and
the beginning of it's next incarnation. I will be giving up the the reigns to
Neu Romance, and moving on to my next project :) The remaining Sweatt Bros. will guide the show with their own inspirations, and I'll say with confidence that Neu Romance will only grow and become more fabulous in the years to come!
