Providence French Film Festival 2012: Tomboy

Sun, February 26, 2012 4:30 PM - 4:30 PM Cable Car Cinema. Tomboy Thursday February 23, 6:30 p.m. / Sunday February 26 4:30 p.m. DIRECTED BY Céline Sciamma France | 2011 | 84 mn CAST Zoê Heran, Malonn Levana, Jeanne Disson Exploring similar territory as “Ma vie en rose”, Céline Sciamma delivers a bitter sweet portrait of a ten year old girl who passes for a boy. t's possible Sciamma intends the story to be a light-handed allegory of intolerance (the difference between the kids' straightforwardness and the adults' handwringing in reaction to what's going on is telling) but it hardly matters. There is no shrill political edge here. Rather it works magnificently on its own terms as an evocation of the painful and tender confusion of childhood's end and the guileless performance of newcomer Heran in the title role is astonishing.
