PART ONE: Carvers will display a pre-carved pumpkin while Zoo guests vote for their favorite pumpkin creation. PART TWO: On Saturday from 11am to 3pm, carvers will be asked to carve a single large pumpkin with a 3D Zoo themed style. PART THREE: On Sunday from 10am to 2pm, carvers will be asked to carve a single large pumpkin with no specific theme. Scores from all three events will be tallied and the overall points winner will be crowned champion of “The Jack Hanna Pumpkin Carving Championship”. Experience: I have been carving for about 8 years. I started off doing mostly ice sculptures, but then slowly started doing pumpkins, fruit, and vegetable carvings. I have apprenticed for Rock on Ice and I’m now part of their carving team. Ice carving is my first passion, but I love the fall because I get to showcase my talents on pumpkins. My favorite is to cave 200-300 pound pumpkins because you can get really creative!

Experience: Gus started out growing giant pumpkins in 1997. It wasn’t until 2002 that Gus started carving them at the Indiana State Fair. He had his first experience with fruit and vegetable carving competitions in 2008 at the Logan Vegetable Carving Competition.
Accolades/Accomplishments/Career Highlights:
Gus’ greatest artistic accomplishment is sculpting fruit for the conservatory at Bellagio in Las Vegas (2007).
His favorite places to carve are at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Circleville Pumpkin Show.
He won 1st place in the professional division at the Heritage Day’s Food Art Competition in 2011.
Personal Statement: Gus grows giant squash, including most of those for today’s competition, with his growing partners Duke and Andrew Maston at their ‘Jurassic Patch’ in Morrow County. He is employed full-time as an Engineer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He has one daughter, Bailey, who is his greatest achievement of all time.

Experience: Jim has been carving fruit for two years, last fall was his last year carving pumpkins. Jim has been an Executive Chef for 20 years and currently works at a college in western Pennsylvania. Jim attended a pumpkin carving class in Washington D.C. taught by Ray Villafane’s from the show Halloween Wars. Accolades/Accomplishments/Career Highlights:
Jim won an Iron Chef Competition in Boston, Massachusetts in 1994.
The first 3D pumpkin he carved was 180 lbs and won 1st place and titled “Mr. October” in an online pumpkin carving contest hosted by Greg Butauski (from the World Food Sculptors Association)
Jim carved a 750 lb pumpkin into a baby Jesus in a manger.
Personal Statement: “My first year of carving pumpkins was a learning experience and also very exciting. Hopefully I can defend my “Mr. October” title and this upcoming year will be just as eventful and fun.”
Stephen Koch Hometown: Yorktown, IN Favorite Animal: This space isn’t large enough to mention all my favorite animals! Experience: I have been carving since I was 11 years old, but the medium hasn’t changed throughout my life. When I would younger, I did small carvings out of balsa and bass wood. As I got older I moved to wire and soapstone. After attending Culinary School I started carving ice and fruit, which I have been doing for the past 11 years. Recently, I have tackled carving a 13’ tall, 119 year old red oak tree, multiple sand sculptures, and pumpkins! Carving in any medium involves the same special perception and similar skills though the tools vary a lot.
