Enjoy holiday decorated historic homes dating back to the late 1890s in Port Norfolk, one of 5 historic districts in Portsmouth. In 1890, the Port Norfolk Land Co. purchased 175 acres of what is now the Port Norfolk Historic District. The lots were promoted with the promise of fresh air and a view of the harbor. In 1895, a horse-drawn streetcar line was introduced on Mt Vernon Ave. Most of the homes are single family. Bungalows, foursquares and Queen Anne homes predominate. Many of the more ornate and grand homes are found along Bayview Avenue with a view of the Elizabeth River. The area was annexed by the City in 1918. The neighborhood has maintained a high degree of architectural integrity and still retains its own small commercial and institutional core. The neighborhood was listed on the State and National Registers in 1983.
