All About AP Style

For the November meetup, group member Sabrina will lead a discussion on AP Style. This is the style that your articles and press releases should be written in. If you plan to write any articles for publication or press releases, you should be familiar with at least the basics of AP Style. Editors appreciate when things are written this way and it shows you are a professional when comes to writing articles and press releases. Such things as writing "e-mail" instead of "email" or "Web site" instead of "website" and learning state abbreviations (which are different than the postal abbreviations), as well as how to write out time, and other important factors will be discussed. Not following AP Style is a pet peeve of many editors (they have personally told me this and I do copy editing for a regional magazine and it bugs me as well). So join us and learn what it is all about. This will help ensure that all your articles and press releases go out looking professional. Since this topic may not be enough to sustain a two-hour discussion, we will open the floor up to a general writing discussion for the last half hour. We will plan for the meeting to go as follows: 7:00 - 7:20 - Introductions and what you are working on (share with the group who you are, what type of writing you do, what you did with your writing over the last month, and what your goal is for the next month) 7:20 - 7:55 - Sabrina will lead a discussion about AP Style 7:50 - 8:00 - Take a five minute break to use the restroom, refill drinks, stretch, etc. 8:00 - 8:55 - Continue AP Style discussion, ask questions, etc. If there are no AP Style questions we will open the floor up to a general writing discussion. 8:55 - 9:00 - Wrap up discussion and set agenda for topic for the next month 9:00 - Meeting adjourned
