ALEXA WILEY
Michael Manning
9:30 p.m. | Free | 21 and over
Since returning to her hometown in 2000, Wiley has organized music events at local colleges and for the Oregon State women's prison. She quickly became a fixture of the local -- then regional folk scenes -- playing, it seems, anywhere there was an acoustic stage.
Wiley has opened for and played with an outrageous range of fellow musicians, from legendary American folk icon Michael Hurley to brilliant up-and-coming talents like Lincoln Crockett and Paul Evans. Her style isn't quite folk, and it isn't quite world beat, it isn't exactly jazz and it isn't anything you've ever heard before (although you'll wish you had). She's really too modest to credit her own, unique muse. But it shows.
When Red Newt Records (a division of Frederick Productions) brought Wiley into Jim Brunberg's renowned Mississippi Studios for her first commercial recording sessions, she blew everyone away by nailing virtually every track in a single take. The result, the fourteen track LP eating that way, is a powerful, multilayered yet almost-understated set of Wiley's gorgeous, impressionistic songs.
