Aravaipa Canyon is one of the few protected riparian areas in Arizona and it is an incredible backpacking destination. This is truly a desert paradise with a perennial stream, towering canyon walls, lush vegetation, and lots of wildlife. What makes Aravaipa so unique is its beautiful wilderness characteristics, including the lack of any well defined trails. It's often easier to walk in the water than on the bank. It will be cold, but this is a great time of year to visit. This is the kind of trip where you regularly say "OMG, this is incredible!" We'll leave early Friday morning slightly hung over from our New Year's Eve festivities. The hike in is a leisurely 6 miles and we'll set-up camp at Horse Camp Canyon. There'll be plenty of time for exploring, card playing, and cocktails. We'll keep our eyes out for coatimundi, javelina, and other wildlife. On Saturday we'll day hike further up the canyon to the east end (9 miles). We'll head out on Sunday and will stop in Winkleman for pizza on the way home. This is a easy+ hike with minimal elevation gain but the route is mostly off trail and you will get wet. Water socks and camp shoes are recommended. Campfires are allowed. No pets allowed by the BLM on this hike. The permit fee is $15/person. No refunds if you cancel. Please check your schedule carefully before signing up. Carpools will be set-up from Tucson as needed.
