Description
Read one or both of the following books: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/phxlawgrl/HomerandLangley.gifHomer & Langley by E.L. Doctorow -- Reviewed on NPR on Sept 4, 2009. This a fictionalized account of the true story of two brothers found dead inside their Harlem apartment in 1947. In death they became instant New York City folklore. Only after they've passed do the neighbors and the world find out that the brothers were junk collecting eccentrics who gradually shut out everyone and everything except their growing piles of newspapers, magazines, science experiments and general junk. Find it on Amazon or at the Phoenix Public Library. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/phxlawgrl/ThisIBelievevolone.gifThis I Believe, Volume One: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men & Women, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gedimann -- Originally created as a radio show segment in the 1950s by Edward R. Murrow and resurrected by NPR in 2005, This I Believe is "your personal credo" in a few short paragraphs. The book is a mix of statements by celebrities and regular folks. Publisher's Weekly says: ...(the regular people's credos) make up some of the book's most powerful and memorable moments, from the surgeon whose illiterate mother changed his early life with faith and a library card to the English professor whose poetry helped him process a traumatic childhood event. These reminders of life's simple truths should be an excellent start to Thanksgiving week. Find the book on Amazon or at the Phoenix Public Library. Listen to an audio sample of the book. Please read one or the other, or both. We look forward to seeing you at the November meeting! Friday, November 20th 7pm Borders Books at Paradise Valley mall; look for a group of 10-15 people at several tables, with a sign announcing the bookclub name Please note: there is a $1 charge, per person, paid in cash at the meeting. It helps defray the Meeting Organizer's annual membership fees to Meetup.com
