Wellness Winter Wonderland at Wellness Community of Philadelphia
When someone is diagnosed with cancer, feelings of fear, anxiety, and stress may surface, but did you know that children of the loved one can experience these feelings too? While many support systems are in place for people with cancer, there are few existing programs for the children of a family member with cancer.
BOOST Camp, part of the Junior League of Philadelphia, Inc., will be holding events for kids 6 – 15 who have had a parent, sibling, or close relative diagnosed with cancer. BOOST Camp is in collaboration with The Wellness Community of Philadelphia and is offered free to kids going through this experience. The day camp will be held on numerous dates throughout the 2009 – 2010 year and includes: food, fun activities, and support.
BOOST Camp offers these children opportunities to:
- Participate in fun and creative activities
- Meet other children in similar situations
- Develop social skills and act independently
- Build a positive self-esteem
- Speak with trained individuals in a caring, nurturing environment
The program is free, but registration is required by December 3. Call (215) 879-7733 to register or for more information.
The Wellness Winter Wonderland will include:
- Holiday arts and crafts activities, such as creating decorative wrapping paper, gingerbread houses, snow globes, holiday gifts, and much more
- Games and team building activities special for the holiday season with prizes
- Fun snacks and refreshments, such as s’mores and hot cocoa
- A separate adult program for parents
