Sixth Annual Philly Phyzz Phest
The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks Celebrates “Soda’s Pop”
(Philadelphia, PA) On Saturday, July 7, 2012 from 1pm - 5pm, the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks will host the Sixth Annual Philly Phyzz Phest at the Physick House located at 321 S. 4th Street, in the Society Hill section of Olde City, Philadelphia.
The annual Philly Phyzz Phest is held in commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Phillip Syng Physick. Credited as being the “Father of American Surgery” as well as “Soda’s Pop” for his creation of flavored carbonated beverages as a relief for his patient’s gastric disorders and stomach discomforts.
To celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Physick and his contribution to Philadelphia history, the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks will host a day of fun and activities for the whole family in the garden of the Physick house, which is the only freestanding Federal-styled mansion remaining in Society Hill, built in 1786 by Henry Hill.
Admission to the Philly Phyzz Phest is FREE to all and includes refreshments such as birthday cake and ice cream, activities, and an opportunity to experience and learn about an influential piece of American history. Additional food, souvenirs and Dr. Physick’s soda (recreated from the original 1807 recipe by Dr. Physick’s 3rd great grandson Del Connor) will be available for purchase along with tours of Physick House for a small $5 fee.
Activities will include “Phyzzical Science” experiments to discover what makes soda “pop,” churning out home made ice cream, games of that period in history, ringing of bells to commemorate the cracking of the Liberty Bell (which happened during the funeral procession of Dr. Physick’s patient Chief Justice John Marshall in 1835) and the signing of the Declaration of Independence using replica quil pens and inkstands inspired by the one used in the actual signing, which was designed by Dr. Physick’s grandfather. Guests will also be able to participate in the reading of the Declaration of Independence, which was originally done by Colonel John Nixon on July 8th, 1776, as well as sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Physick.
