Slacklining 101

If you came with us to the Banff Film Festival, you know slacklining is a crazy, hard core sport that carries its members all over the world to some of the highest and most beautiful places you can imagine. The slacklining film was one of my favorite two of the festival and left me yearning to try it myself. (Snowkiting, the other favorite is coming soon). What is it? Slacklining is a balance sport invented by rock climbers who would stretch 1-inch nylon webbing between two anchor points. It is like tightrope walking for outdoorsy folks, except the line is not taut. Instead the line has a little "slack" making it sway and bounce which allows for impressive tricks and stunts. Oh, did I mention this might be hard. . . Since we are beginners, we are not going to start on top of a spire in Yosemite, we are going to start with a two hour lesson here in Downingtown. Set up only a couple feet off of the floor, you will have a safe arena to give this sport a try. Our instructor will talk a little about the history, but concentrate on technique and hands on experience. He is an accomplished slackliner, known to be able to jump as far as 15 feet and land on just that 1-inch webbing. If you are interested, he will also talk a bit about how to set up a slack line yourself and what equipment you need to do it on your own. The class is capped at 10 people.
